Relay for Life Fundraiser

Relay for Life of Marshall County is promoting tickets for the Nailers hockey game on Saturday, Jan. 24 against Fort Wayne. Tickets can be purchased online at wheelingnailers.

Advent Celebration

Wheeling Jesuit University will host a new Advent celebration called “Las Posadas” at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4.

“Las Posadas” is a Mexican popular devotional procession which reenacts Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging in Bethlehem. The procession begins at Ignatius Hall and concludes at the Chapel of Mary and Joseph with festive Mexican music, food and drink.

The event is being planned by WJU’s Campus Ministry in collaboration with the International Student Office and Residence Life.

Las Posadas, which means “the inns,” also will raise awareness of the difficulties facing migrants on the U.S. southern border.

The event is free and open to the public.

Woman’s Club of Wheeling

The Woman’s Club of Wheeling will meet at Monument Place, Kruger Street, Wheeling, on Friday, Dec. 5.

The board of directors will meet at 10:45 a.m. with president Eileen Simon presiding. A la carte luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Virginia Schultz, hospitality chairman, and her committee will sell tickets for the club’s Christmas luncheon to be held at Wheeling Country Club at noon Friday, Dec. 19.

The business session will begin at 1 p.m. Immediately following, the program will be presented by Jeanne Schramm, who will discuss her self-published memoir, “A Hitchhiker’s Diary,” which tells of her travels through 18 countries in nine months.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The Elm Grove Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 4442 Ladies Auxiliary is a newly formed group that is accepting new members. The auxiliary recently filled 50 stockings for Boatsie’s Boxes and collected money to help with shipping costs. Anyone interested in joining may contact the VFW at 304-230-1276.

Food Drive

The Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department will conduct its annual food drive from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Residents are asked to place non-perishable items on their doorstep or deliver them during the 3 p.m. Christmas parade.

Holiday Home Tour

The Marshall County Historical Society will feature homes for Christmas Tours from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7.

Lunch With Books

Author Marie Manilla will discuss her new novel, “The Patron Saint of Ugly,” at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The novel is about a family of Italians (from Sicily and Calabria) and Italian-American West Virginians. Manilla will focus on her personal Italian-American story that made its way into the book, plus evil-eye (malocchio) lore.

People’s University

The People’s University course on the Holocaust continues at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, with a panel discussion featuring first-hand accounts from Wheeling teachers and students who participated in a Holocaust-related study seminar to Poland this past summer.

These Classrooms Without Borders participants were accompanied by a Holocaust survivor who had been imprisoned in labor camps and concentration camps, including Auschwitz.

Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner of Temple Shalom, Wheeling, will also present.

The People’s University is free and open to the public.

Elm Grove Eagles Auxiliary

Wreath Workshop

The Wheeling Civic Garden Center at Oglebay Park will present a workshop titled “Fresh Green Arrangements and Wreaths” at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11.

Participants will learn to create and decorate fresh noble fir wreaths and mixed pine arrangements. Deadline for registration and payment is Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Civil War Roundtable

Roger Micker will speak on the election of 1864 at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24 in the Ohio County Public Library’s auditorium. The talk is sponsored by the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable and is open to the public.

Micker is a member of Ohio’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee, the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable and Ohio’s social studies graduation testing committee. After 40 years of teaching history, he retired from Steubenville High School.

His talk will focus on the political issues surrounding the 1864 general and the 1862 mid term elections. When Lincoln believed that he may not even be nominated by the Republican Party for a second term, close advisers suggested that he cancel the presidential election. Lincoln refused. Lincoln believed the election was his greatest victory, regardless of the outcome.

Ohio County Council

The Ohio County Community Educational Outreach Service will meet at the Valley Grove Community Building Monday, Nov. 24.

Nancy Kish, Ohio County president, will convene the business meeting at 10 a.m. The agenda will include final plans for the county Christmas tea party. Club reports are due to the county chairman, and club membership dues will be collected. The club is celebrating National Family Week this week.

Victorian Christmas Tea

A Victorian Tea in the holiday-decorated Victorian Mansion Museum in Barnesville will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.

Island Lions Club

C. Allan Spencer will discuss his book, “They Gave the Scalp Halloo,” at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, Nov. 25.

Spencer’s book is a reference work surveying the battle tactics and culture of the indigenous people of the Great Lakes and Eastern Woodlands regions from the 16th to 18th centuries. The program is part of the library’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month, which includes a new display in the library’s main display case through the end of November.

People’s University

The People’s University course on the Holocaust continues at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25..

Dr. Jeff Rutherford, an associate history of professor at Wheeling Jesuit University, will discuss the murder of European Jewry that was inseparable from the larger German policies implemented in the occupied territories to the east of the Third Reich. This presentation will analyze the larger context of German population policies and the place Jews occupied in Nazi dreams and nightmares.

The People’s University course is free and open to the public.

Christmas Luncheon

The West Virginia Auxiliary of the Congregation of St. Joseph will hold a Christmas luncheon from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at Wilson Lodge, Oglebay Park, Wheeling.

Entertainment will be provided by Tony Bruno, music director at St. Vincent de Paul Church, accompanied by Alexandra Perkins.

The auxiliary will present its annual donation to the sisters during the luncheon.

Dress-a-Bear Breakfast

Big Brothers Big Sisters will host a Dress-a-Bear Breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Wheeling Artisan Center, 1400 Main St., Wheeling.

The fundraiser includes pancakes and sausage, cookie decorating, face painting, a stuffed bear and a visit with Santa.

Benefit Concert

The contemporary Christian band Led By Mercy is hosting a free Thanksgiving benefit concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22 at Mercy Baptist Church, 3474 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton.

The two-hour concert will feature original contemporary Christian music, the music of the leading contemporary Christian artists and scripture readings. Refreshments will be served.

Shawnee Program

The Brooke County Historical Museum and Culture Center will have a program on the Shawnee tribe by Christian Allen from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at the museum, 704 Charles St., Wellsburg.

Allen, of Native American descent, will discuss childhood and history of the tribe and also will expound on some of the museum artifacts. Before, during intermission and after the program, a CD of Native American music by Aaron Carey will be played. The program is free and open to the public.

Wheeling AARP

The Neighbors Helping Neighbors annual non-perishable food drive continues through Sunday, Nov. 30. Individuals, employers, community groups, etc. can donate or collect food. Riesbeck’s Elm Grove is selling pre-priced, pre-bagged groceries in the store. Items can be purchased and left at the checkout.

Monetary donations will be accepted and used to purchase bags of groceries.
