Belmont County Election Recount Leaves Results Unchanged

Monday’s automatic recount of a Belmont County Commission race and a Powhatan Point levy did not change the results reported on Election Day.

In the tight race between incumbent Commissioner Matt Coffland, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Josh Meyer that resulted in Coffland’s unseating, Coffland picked up one vote in the recount, placing the results at 15,111 votes for Coffland and 15,252 for Meyer. The difference came to 141 votes.

Coffland had sought a third term on the board of commissioners, pointing out his three decades of service and involvement in numerous economic and infrastructure improvements around the county.

Meyer, a Bellaire council member, ran on a platform of change and the need for Republican input on the formerly Democratic-controlled board of commissioners. The victory of fellow Republican J.P. Dutton means the GOP has a majority of seats on the three-person board.

In Powhatan Point, a 5-mill fire department replacement levy was defeated by an even narrower margin of 326-324 votes. Elections Director William Shubat noted this was one of the closest results the board has seen.

“This was a two-vote difference,” he said, adding that none of the other races had a difference of 0.5 percent. The results of the election now stand as official.

A total of 31,848 votes were cast in the county during the election. This represented 67.8 percent of Belmont County’s registered voters.
