The Marshall County Family Resource Network wrapped up its winter accessory drive Thursday after offering hundreds of cold weather staples to charities and individuals in need.
The organization's drive, called the "Giving Tree," is a project designed to provide cold-weather accessories to men, women and children throughout the area.
The project -- hosted by the Feeding Body and Soul Community Kitchen at Simpson United Methodist Church, the Department of Health and Human Resources office and Reynolds Rapid Care in Moundsville -- offered more than 800 new hats, scarves and gloves to community members in need.
Winter accessories were also donated to Wellspring Pregnancy Center, Marshall County Daycare Center and Moundsville Middle School. The project is sponsored by Noble Energy.
According to Family Resource Network Executive Director Stacie Dei, the organization partnered with Noble Energy to provide the accessories for the first Giving Tree activity.
In January, Noble, along with Tug Hill Energy, the Junior League of Wheeling, the Moundsville Police Department and the Salvation Army, also provided 250 coats to several Marshall County schools and seven local organizations.
Dei added the Family Resource Network will partner again with Reynolds on March 31 for a spring Giving Tree event, offering sunscreen and other warm-weather staples to those in need. Network staff will continue the Giving Tree with summer events and giveaways later in the year.
"We definitely want to do it again next year and if people see hats, gloves and other items while they are out, we would appreciate donations. We would like to start the project again in the fall," Dei said. "We're going to expand and continue he Giving Tree around seasonal and situational themes. At Reynolds Memorial Hospital for Doctor's Day, we will offer prevention items like sunblock and information about child wellness visits. We will also have summer learning and school supply events to make this a year-long project."
