Marshall County Family Resource Network Adds to Food Drive, Seeks Volunteer Teams

By Drew Parker 2 min read

A local organization is searching for local businesses and nonprofits to assist with an annual food project.

The Marshall County Family Resource Network will host its second-annual "Hunger Doesn't Take a Summer Vacation" Community food drive this summer, in support of area food pantries, soup kitchens and a new backpack meal program.

In June, the network donated 9,100 pounds of food gathered from the drive to 12 local organizations.

According to project coordinator Sara Wood, the 2017 drive will be held at 10 a.m. June 5, with a goal of 10,000 pounds in nonperishable food, with a pickup day for food pantries to be held from 12:30-3:30 p.m. June 6.

This week, Family Resource Network staff are asking interested donor teams within businesses and organizations to take part in the drive by attending a team meeting at 11:30 a.m. April 5. RSVPs are requested for the luncheon by Thursday. The April 5 meeting will begin for food pantries and backpack program leaders at 9:30 a.m. High-need items for local pantries include canned vegetables, fruits and meats, baby cereal and formula, peanut butter, pasta and sauce, condiments, spices, rice, child-friendly foods, jams and jellies and creamed soups.

The addition of child-friendly items requested for the drive will add a new portion of the program -- food backpacks for local schools, to be distributed in the fall.
