DeGuzman Using da Vinci Surgery at Wheeling Hospital

2 min read

WHEELING -- Dr. Gary DeGuzman, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Wheeling Hospital, is now using the da Vinci surgical technology to provide even more benefits to his patients.

DeGuzman, the hospital's director of minimally invasive/pelvic reconstructive and gynecological robotic surgery, utilizes the state-of-the-art surgical technique which is critical in the management of female abdominal/pelvic disease. The benefits of minimally invasive surgery include less operative trauma, shorter hospital stay, less pain and scarring, faster recovery and reduced post-surgical complications, such as adhesions.

The robotic-assisted surgery replaces traditional open surgery, which involves one large incision, and augments traditional laparoscopy that uses several small incisions. With the da Vinci system, DeGuzman is able to use just a few very small incisions.

The system's wristed instruments bend and rotate, allowing DeGuzman to operate with enhanced precision and control. The technology is 100 percent controlled by DeGuzman, who works with a dedicated surgical team to ensure everything runs smoothly.

The da Vinci system is one of the newest technologies available for hysterectomies and other conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse, benign and malignant diseases, endometriosis, pelvic adhesive disease and other gynecologic issues.

DeGuzman, who completed specialized training in using the new technology, said, "This is an alternative approach that provides more intraoperative dexterity, allowing enhanced surgical performance."

Other benefits of the da Vinci surgery include less blood loss and less chance for transfusion; lower hospital readmission rate and less chance of surgeon switching to open surgery during the procedure.

Others surgeons using the da Vinci system at Wheeling Hospital include Dr. Christopher Mascarenhas for colorectal surgeries and both Dr. David Ghaphery and Dr. John Wolen for general surgeries.
