Ohio County Commission Says Liquor Permits Sought for New Sheetz, Oglebay

A new Sheetz store -- the second at The Highlands -- and a retailer at Oglebay Park are in the process of applying for liquor permits.
Their requests became public Tuesday night when Ohio County commissioners agreed to send letters on behalf of both entities to the West Virginia Alcohol and Beverage Control Administration telling them the county has no zoning laws, which is a necessary part of the application process.
The new Sheetz store will be located just off Interstate 70 on the opposite side of the highway from the existing Sheetz at The Highlands. Sheetz also operates a third store in Woodsdale, giving Ohio County a third Sheetz location.
Also seeking a permit is Wildlife Trading Company of New Mexico Inc., which operates retail spots within Oglebay Park. Commissioner Randy Wharton explained the company's liquor permit would be separate from that already approved for the city of Wheeling for the park.
According to its website Wildlife Trading Company is a retail outsource partner providing gift shop operations at nature and wildlife cultural attractions in North America specifically zoos, aquariums, museums, botanical gardens, science centers and other leisure attractions.
Commissioners weren't certain what is being planned by the company at the park.
Meanwhile, voting Precinct 16 will be moved from the Par 3 golf course at Oglebay Park to the Pine Room, also in the park, said County Administrator Greg Stewart. Voters will be informed by mail, and a notice will be placed on the door at the Par 3 course location on the day of the May 8 primary election.
Also Tuesday, history buff Wendy Elswick of Ohio County wore historic garb as she presented information about the first Ohio County courthouse -- located in West Liberty -- to the commissioners. She asked them to consider buying the old courthouse structure and the building beside it, and relocating them to county property for historical preservation.
The buildings are located at 1130 and 1140 VanMeter Way in West Liberty.
Commissioners said they would review her information.
