Wheeling Hospital's Howard Long Wellness Center will hold a free workshop and demonstration from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday to celebrate World T'ai Chi and Qigong Day.
T'ai Chi instructor Steve Perdok Sr. and students from the wellness center will lead the event that joins with thousands of people in hundreds of cities in more than 80 nations around the world to celebrate the benefits of T'ai Chi and Qigong. Certified instructors Donna Melchiori and Nancy Shuttler also will take part.
Those attending the event will learn about the health benefits of the Chinese art of T'ai Chi and Qigong.
Recent medical studies have presented documentation that T'ai Chi, called "meditation in motion," has proven value in treating or preventing many health problems such as arthritis, back pain, balance, strength, flexibility, blood pressure issues, ADHD, depression and chronic pain.
Qigong is the practice of aligning breath with a more stationary coordinated slow stylized repetition of fluid movements in a calm mindful state.
Perdok, Shuttler and Melchiori also are certified in T'ai Chi for arthritis and fall prevention from Dr. Paul Lam's Tai Chi for Health Institute.
