CHARLESTON — Wheeling native Amy Shuler-Goodwin was elected Tuesday as the next mayor of Charleston.
Unofficial results showed the Democrat Goodwin capturing 9,488 votes in the race; Republican JB Akers, 8,492; and Independent Andy Backus, 689.
Goodwin will succeed Mayor Danny Jones, who did not seek re-election after 15 years in office. She is the daughter of Wheeling business owner Floyd Shuler, and teacher Pat Shuler.
Politics runs in Goodwin's family. In 2016, her husband, former U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin, was a Democrat candidate for governor.
Her grandmother, Thais Blatnik, was a former West Virginia state senator representing Wheeling.
Goodwin served as state deputy secretary of commerce and commissioner of tourism under former Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.
Prior to that, she worked as communications director for Tomblin and former Gov. Bob Wise.
