Ohio County Schools is suggesting an Aug. 15 start to the 2019-20 school year.

The proposed school calendar for the next school year was presented Monday night during a public hearing convened prior to the start of the regular meeting of the Ohio County Board of Education.

The calendar has teachers returning to the classroom on Monday, Aug. 12, with the first day for students on Thursday, Aug. 15. The first semester would end with the start of the holiday break on Friday, Dec. 20, with students returning on Monday, Jan. 6. Spring break is scheduled for students from April 6 through April 13, and the last day is set for May 22.

There is a second public hearing regarding the 2019-20 school calendar set for 5:30 p.m. on April 8 at the board office, 2203 National Road, Elm Grove. Board members are expected to vote on the calendar following the second public hearing.

During the regular school board meeting, members voted to maintain the school district's levy rate at the current 95.5 percent.

The decision came after business manager Steven Bieniek provided figures from the Ohio County Assessor's Office setting the total value of all properties in the county at $2,664,697,104 for fiscal year 2020 -- $110 million above the 2019 rates.

Bieniek reported the district's two levies jointly generate just under $32 million annually, and account for about 47 percent of the district's $66 million yearly budget.

Monday's board meeting was recessed and will reconvene at noon on April 16, when members will vote to officially establish the levy rate. Members could choose to amend the 95.5 percent rate at that time, Bieniek said.

Ohio County Schools had three winners of the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe this year, and they were recognized during Monday's board meeting. Honored were Nadia Seymialis of Bridge Street Middle School, Landin Blakely of the Warwood School and Derrick Fortner of Triadelphia Middle School.

Also recognized were winners of the Ohio County Spelling Bee last week. Adam Connors, a third grade student at Steenrod Elementary School, won first place, and will represent Ohio County at the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26-31 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Audrey Kenamond, a fourth grade student at Woodsdale Elementary School, came in second place.

Board president Zach Abraham, and members Sarah Koegler, Molly Aderholt and David Croft were present at Monday night's board meeting. Member Christine Carder participated via internet connection.
