MOUNDSVILLE -- A pair of burglaries in Moundsville led to the arrest of a Proctor man earlier this month.
Cody Slaughter, 29, whose address is variously given as 395 Yoho Lane in Proctor and homeless in court documents, was alleged to have broken into a home on Myrtle Avenue in Moundsville at 4:20 a.m. June 7. A woman calling 911 said she had caught Slaughter in her basement, who proceeded to run out the front door having stolen several items, according to court documents.
The woman told police that she went into the basement to do laundry when she noticed that a fan was on that wasn't normally, which raised her suspicion. She then recognized Slaughter hiding in the corner of the room, who said the woman's son had sent him to the house to grab some belongings. The woman said Slaughter pushed his way past her, grabbing a Playstation 4 and a laptop, with a combined estimated value of $1,100, according to court documents. Police were unable to locate Slaughter at the scene.
Four hours later, at 8:40 a.m., police were again called and notified that a woman's 7-year-old child had let an unknown man into the house Dorsey Street in Moundsville, apparently under the guise of a TV repairman. The man, later determined by surveillance camera footage to be Slaughter, an ex-boyfriend of the homeowner, allegedly took a 32-inch TV, the child's backpack and a baby monitor from the residence before leaving on a bicycle, police said.
Slaughter was arrested the following day without incident. He is charged with two counts of burglary, one count of petit larceny and one count of grand larceny. He remains lodged at the Northern Regional Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bond.
