Five Wetzel County seniors have been awarded a $1,000 Tad Fitzsimmons Memorial Scholarship for 2019. The awards were presented on Awards Day at the respective high schools.
This year's recipients are Megan Brown, from Valley High School; Trey Slider, from Paden City High School; and Jared Kocher, Eli Nice and Lindsey Whiteman from Magnolia High School.
Megan Brown is the daughter of Brad and Kari Brown. She will attend Fairmont State University this fall and major in Elementary Education. megan has maintained a 3.7 GPA while attending VHS. She was involved in athletics including volleyball, softball and cheerleading. She was in the band and the feature twirler. Megan was assistant editor of the yearbook and belonged to the Raze club.
While attending PCHS, Trey Slider maintained a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society, Cat's Club, and was on the Student Advisory Council. He played basketball and baseball. He is the son of Gary and Janet Slider. Trey will attend West Liberty University in the fall and major in Sports Management and minor in Athletic Coaching.
Jared Kocher is the son of Stephen and Holly Kocher. He is a graduate of Magnolia High School where he maintained a 4.0 GPA. He is a member of the NHS, Mu Apha Theta, Science National Honor Society, OVAC All-Conference Academic Team, and competed in Math Field Day. He has volunteered for many community activities and fundraisers. Jared will attend West Virginia University this fall and major in Nursing.
Eli Nice graduated from MHS where he maintained a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of Dave and Kim Nice. He participated in baseball and basketball. Eli was a member of the NHS, SNHS and Mu Alpha Theta. He has belonged to Kid's Kollege and worked Town & Country raising money for Children's Hospital, and has been involved in many other community activities. Eli will attend WLU this fall, majoring in Exercise Physiology.
A graduate of MHS, Lindsay Whiteman will attend Pierpont Community & Technical college this fall, majoring in Health Science and applying to the Radiologic Technology Program. While at Magnolia, Lindsay maintained a 4.0 GPA. She was in the National Honor Society, Senior Class Treasurer, Thespians, and Red Cross Blood Drive team. She was also involved in soccer and softball. Lindsay belonged to Young Life and was a Rotary student of the month. She is the daughter of Scott and Jeanette Whiteman.
The scholarships are funded from proceeds of the previous Tad Fitzsimmons 5K Runs/Walks that were held for eight years in Tad's honor, and the generous donations from businesses and friends.
