Wheeling Fire Department Assistant Chief Ed Geisel, center, stands with Chief Larry Helms, right, and former Chief Cliff Sligar after receiving a golden axe on his last day on the job. Geisel retired Thursday after 40 years of service beginning in August of 1979. “It has been a wonderful 40 years, and I couldn’t have worked with a better bunch of guys, couldn’t have had a better time doing it,” Geisel said during an informal celebration held at the department’s headquarters. “All of you have had an impact on my life and I hope in a small way I had some kind of impact on yours. I enjoyed the countless stories, the countless hours of fun and sorrow and wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
