The odor that was being smelled throughout downtown Wheeling Thursday afternoon may have smelled like natural gas, but a Mountaineer Gas spokesman said the company's servicemen detected no natural gas leaks throughout the city.
Moses Skaff, senior vice president and chief administrative officer at Mountaineer Gas, said the company's servicemen had been responding to calls for much of Thursday concerning a natural gas-like smell in the city, and will continue to respond as the calls come in.
Reports coming back from the field showed no natural gas leaks. Skaff said that if it was a gas leak, with the range that the smell was being reported, something would have shown up on the company's gas flow monitors at its dispatch areas or regulation stations.
Skaff said Mountaineer Gas had not been able to confirm the reason for the odor as of Thursday evening.
