Police Find Body of Child Who Fell into Big Wheeling Creek

WHEELING – Police in Wheeling have found the body of an 8-year-old boy who fell into Big Wheeling Creek in the Elm Grove area this afternoon.

Responders were seen pulling the unresponsive child from the creek around 6 p.m. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to police.

According to Ohio County Emergency Management Director Lou Vargo, the child reportedly fell into the creek behind the WesBanco branch on National Road and got swept away.

Wheeling Police Deputy Chief Martin Kimball said the child, 8-year-old Emanual Williams, was walking with his sister and mother, Jackie Christopher, in the creek behind Dairy Queen when he slipped in the water. Though the water was only about one foot deep, it was rushing swiftly and pulled Williams under.

Christopher attempted to hold on to Williams, but could not, Kimball said. A call to police was made at 3:01 p.m.

Additionally, volunteers with kayaks were looking at the shoreline around the area, and additional units from Marshall County and Benwood came to the on scene.
