Foundation Created To Save Bishop Donahue High School in McMechen

MCMECHEN — Parents, alumni and Bishop Donahue High School supporters have announced the Save Bishop Donahue Foundation in an effort to ensure the school remains open for the 2017-18 school year.

A 10-member committee was formed after the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston announced the decision to close the school at the end of this school year.

Foundation President Norm Stenger said the response has been overwhelming.

“We not only have the support of those in our community, but also have alumni from all over the country reaching out and asking how they can help,” he said.

If the school does not re-open in the fall, donors will receive full refunds, organizers said.

“People want to know that their contribution will go solely to Bishop Donahue High School. By forming the foundation, we are able to guarantee their money is used only for the purpose of keeping Bishop Donahue open for years to come,” Treasurer Anna Lehew said.

The committee is working on a five-year strategic plan, which members hope to present to diocesan officials.

“Our plan addresses enrollment, long and short-term financial stability and physical enhancements,” committee member Dana Mele said. “We have requested a meeting with … Bishop (Michael J.) Bransfield, to present our plan to him.”

In addition to the formation of the foundation and the strategic plan, the committee is also working with the St. Joseph Foundation in an effort to explore their canonical rights.
