Death of Belmont County Couple Ruled Murder/Suicide

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County Sheriff’s Office has released new information on a New Year’s Day murder/suicide on Garrett Hill Road outside of town. Chief Deputy James Zusack said the investigation is complete.

Zusack identified the shooter as Barry Killeen, 53. The report states Killeen shot and killed his wife, Stephanie Killeen, 46, and then himself.

Law enforcement officers were called to the scene by the couple’s daughter, who said Barry Killeen had called her and said he had shot his wife.

“The call came in at 4:30 p.m.,” he said. “We responded to the scene. We called the Special Operations Branch (SOB) out. We got the information we needed. We got to the scene and went down to confront the male individual. …While we were going down to confront him, apparently he shot himself. Both victims died of gunshot wounds, one being self-inflicted, the other being the male individual shooting his wife. Our detectives took over the scene and it was pretty apparent what happened from the information we had, the evidence that we gathered and just how the scenario took place, we’ve confirmed it to be a murder/suicide at this point.” He added that any motive is unknown.

“We don’t know why it happened. We have no idea,” Zusack said. He said that law enforcement had been called to the site before.

“We were there a month prior to that. Same situation. He was barricaded in his house, wanting to do harm to himself,” Zusack said. “We got him detained without incident on that matter, so we had prior dealing with this individual.
