Wheeling Island, several areas beginning to flood

WHEELING — Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is closed due to Ohio River flooding today.

Lou Vargo, Ohio County Emergency Management Agency director, said water had reached the casinoás parking lot Saturday morning. The facility closed for the safety of its workers.

Other businesses and homes on parts of Wheeling Island are surrounded by wateras well.

In addition to flooding, there are also basement backups, road slips and hillside mud and rock slides to deal with.

Vargo said the Ohio River is expected to crest at 1 a.m. Sunday at nearly 40 feet in Wheeling. He noted it will take several hours for the water to recede. Members of the West Virginia National Guard are expected to arrive Monday to help the city of Wheeling Operations with cleanup.

The Brookside area of Belmont County also is experiencing flooding. Homes, businesses, fire stations and athletic fields all are taking on water in that area,
