Accidental Shooting in Shadyside Leaves Teen Hospitalized

SHADYSIDE -- Shadyside resident Michael Christy, 27, faces numerous charges after he accidentally shot a Powhatan Point teen in the chest Saturday.

According to Shadyside Police Chief Donald Collette, police were called to the York Terrace Apartments at 7:40 p.m. Saturday to investigate a reported shooting. An officer found Christy outside of his apartment applying pressure to the chest of the 16-year-old male victim.

Christy explained that, while showing-off his new gun, he had accidentally discharged a round through the juvenile's chest. The bullet shattered the drywall behind him. Christy had reportedly been drinking alcohol, police said.

Doctors at Wheeling Hospital stabilized the juvenile for a flight to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Police said the teen remained in critical condition at press time.

Officers jailed Christy on charges of negligent assault, assault, recklessly causing serious physical harm.
