UPDATE: Man dies in accident that closed W.Va. 2

MOUNDSVILLE — A Moundsville man died as a result of an accident that closed a section of W.Va. 2 in Marshall County this afternoon.

Sheriff Kevin Cecil said the two-vehicle crash occurred just as snow began to blanket the area Saturday afternoon. The driver of a car traveling north near Burch Ridge in the area of the CertainTeed plant lost control and collided with a southbound vehicle “nearly head-on,” Cecil said.

Tom Hart, director of the county Office of Emergency Management, confirmed that several agencies responded to the crash, reported around 4 p.m. today. Hart said the two-vehicle accident with entrapment occurred near the CertainTeed plant along W.Va. 2, south of Moundsville. Cecil said the northbound driver died as a result, and his female passenger was seriously injured and hospitalized. The other driver was taken to a hospital with what Cecil believed were minor injuries.

Cecil said the driver who died was a male resident of Moundsville who was in his mid-30s. He declined to identify the man Saturday evening.

Tom Hart, director of the county Office of Emergency Management, said the Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department, Washington Lands VFD and Marshall County EMS were all at the scene. Deputies continue to investigate.

Cecil noted that deputies responded to “a large number” of other accidents Saturday and recommended that people remain at home if possible until weather conditions improve.
