West Virginia Teacher Unions: County Education Association Votes Will Determine ‘Statewide Work Actions’

CHARLESTON — The heads of West Virginia teachers’ and school service personnel unions Friday said they will allow county education associations to determine what action, if any, to take over the state Senate’s continued push to reform public education with Senate Bill 451.

The union leaders representing the West Virginia Education Association, the state chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, and the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association, during a press conference Friday at the State Capitol Building, also said the pieces are in place for a work stoppage in the future, but would not say what would trigger such a work stoppage.

Union representatives announced that ballots are being sent next week to union and non-union teachers and school service personnel in every county to vote to authorize to state union leaders to call a work stoppage if they deem a stoppage is necessary.
