WHEELING — One person is dead after crashing into a North Wheeling garage, reportedly after the vehicle fled the scene of a disturbance at a nearby establishment where three people were injured.
According to Wheeling Police, officers were sent to Generations Restaurant at about 2:10 a.m. today for a disturbance call. Upon arrival, a truck fled the lot with no lights on and officers were told that the driver was the suspect of multiple assaults.
The driver of the truck appeared as if they were going to crash into police cruisers but did not. However, a collision occurred between two cruisers and two officers received minor injuries. They were treated and released from Wheeling Hospital.
According to reports, officers lost sight of the truck and while searching the area for it, were notified of a crash on Pike Street, near Main Street in North Wheeling. When officers arrived, they found that the truck had crashed into a garage with the occupant inside the vehicle dead.
The Ohio County Sherif’s Office is investigating the crash of the police cruisers and the fatal crash, with the assistance of the Wheeling Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
Officials said three people were treated at Wheeling Hospital for injuries received from the assault at Generations. This case is under investigation of the Wheeling Police Department.
Main Street was closed for several hours while the fatal crash was reconstructed and the vehicle was extricated from the building.
The Wheeling Fire Department, AEP, West Virginia Division of Highways, City of Wheeling Operations and several wrecker companies assisted.
Notification of the next of kin related to the fatal crash is being handled by the OCSO. More information will be released as it becomes available.
