Marshall BOE Narrows Search for Superintendent

By MIKE JONES Region Editor 2 min read

MOUNDSVILLE -- The Marshall County Board of Education will hold a special weekend meeting to interview candidates for the open superintendent's position, with the hope of hiring a permanent replacement by the end of the month.

The board is scheduled to meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the district's administrative building in Moundsville at which the members will interview an undisclosed number of applicants during a private executive session before likely making a decision on whom to hire.

They could vote to hire the new superintendent next week if a special meeting is called, said Tony Wood, the district's communications director.

If not, the decision would likely be made during the board's next regular meeting at 7 p.m. May 28.

The position became vacant in January when the board decided not to renew the contract of former superintendent Jeffrey Crook, who resigned the following month to take the interim position as superintendent of Brooke County Schools. That school district hired him Monday night to serve as full-time superintendent, giving him a four-year contract.

Since Crook's departure, Stanley Stewart has served as interim superintendent in Marshall County. He's scheduled to leave that position June 30 and has not expressed interest in the full-time position.

Stewart retired from public education in 2004 after nearly 40 years of educational experience. He previously served as a teacher, counselor, principal, vocational director and superintendent during his career before leaving Marshall County Schools in 1992 to serve as executive director of the former Regional Educational Service Agency 6.

Board members reviewed an unknown number of applications for the position during a special meeting Monday, but did not discuss the matter during their bi-monthly meeting the following day. When hired, the new superintendent will begin working July 1.
