West Liberty To Host W.Va. Sheriffs’ Youth Academy

WEST LIBERTY -- Youths from across West Virginia with an interest in law enforcement will convene at West Liberty University this week for a state youth camp.
The university will host the annual West Virginia Sheriffs' Association Youth Leadership Academy for the first time from today through Friday.
"We're pleased to work with the West Virginia sheriffs and other first responders in providing a safe and informative camp for these young people," said Joseph Montemuro, West Liberty's director of public safety and police chief. "The camp is a positive and enjoyable way to inspire youth and introduce them to law enforcement and safety professionals."
About 150 high-schoolers are expected to attend the six-day summer program, designed to deter risk-taking behavior by teaching students about recreation alternatives and the negative consequences of drugs, alcohol and violence, according to a press release from West Liberty.
The academy also aims to teach responsibility and encourage participation in citizenship activities. According to the West Virginia Sheriffs' Association, the program is not a boot camp but rather offers a "challenging, educational and fun summer camp experience."
Academy staff consists of about 50 sheriffs, deputies, community volunteers and other professionals from throughout the state. Emergency medical personnel also participate in the event.
"This is a great experience for youth. They learn about careers in public service and interact with law enforcement, plus they find out how law enforcement work," Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard said.
Participants will arrive Sunday afternoon and depart in the afternoon of July 12, and a graduation ceremony will be held that day. The event also will feature a mock accident drill on Tuesday that will involve a helicopter landing on campus.
"Firefighters, EMTs and other first responders will assist in the camp and meet and interact with the campers, offering a first-hand look at law enforcement and public safety for those interested in entering the field of public service," according WLU officials.
In previous years, the academy took place elsewhere in the state, as last year's camp was held in Huntington.
The academy is open to both boys and girls in public or private schools who have attained at least a 2.0 on their most recent report card. There is a $75 fee, however Ohio County Sheriff Office will cover that cost for participants from Ohio County. Acceptance is competitive based upon the number of applicants.
