MORGANTOWN -- The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register captured 19 awards Saturday during the 2019 West Virginia Press Association Better Newspapers Contest, held at Lakeview Resort.
The awards honored editorial and advertising work done in 2018. The newspapers compete in Division I with the state's large dailies.
The newspapers won five first-place awards; four second-place awards; and 10 third-place honors.
Staff writer Joselyn King won a first-place award in best sports news and feature reporting for her story on Wheeling native Brooke McArdle being honored by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the Bob Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
McArdle, a 2018 graduate of Wheeling Park High School and a current member of the women's hockey team at Elmira College in New York, is only the second female hockey player in the past 27 years to receive the honor. King's story highlighted McArdle's ties to the Penguins through her play in youth leagues in the Pittsburgh area, and also highlighted an "argument" a 6-year-old McArdle had with Penguins great and current team owner Mario Lemieux.
"At the time, young Brooke McArdle was playing for a youth hockey team in Pittsburgh now called "Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Team" that was coached by Alain Lemieux, Mario's older brother," King's story recalls. "Mario Lemieux sat in with his brother to coach a game, only to have the diminutive McArdle plead to him on the bench she wanted to go in and play center.
"'You're too small,' Mario Lemieux told her. Brooke, nevertheless, continued to try and convince him she could do it."
The judges said of the entry: "A high school girl honored by the Pens with a scholarship based on centering a boy's high school hockey team ... and well reported ... winning combination."
Another first-place honor came for Best Sports Special Section for the 2018 Winter Olympics Guide. The section, compiled and designed by Managing Editor John McCabe, featured stunning graphics and interesting information on many of the athletes, along with a comprehensive listings of events.
Joe Lovell captured a first place award for best single advertisement, black and white, quarter page or less, for his "Baseball Card Roadshow." Of this advertisement, the judges said, "Great use of black and white to get your eye."
The classified advertising staff received a first place for Best Classified Section for the June 3, 2018 edition; and the inside sales staff captured a first-place honor for the April 23, 2018 Design an Ad publication.
The judges said this of Design an Ad: "Wonderful way to engage children and foster their creativity. Great job!"
Second place awards came in the following categories:
Best single editorial - Executive Editor J. Michael Myer, for a series of pieces on West Virginia's Courtesy Patrol, and the amount of money taxpayers spend each year to fund the service
Best News Columnist -- Myer, for his news and feature columns
Best Agency Advertisement - Ohio Valley Medical Center's "Not All Heroes Wear Capes" campaign
Best House Advertisement - Shellie Higgins.
Third-place honors came in 10 categories:
Best Editorial Page -Myer and McCabe
Best Lifestyle columnist - Life Editor Heather Ziegler
Best Sports Special Section - Staff, for Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic
Best Headline Writing - Designer Scott Hanson for three headlines: "There's no Business Like Snow Business;" "Search for Symphony's Next Music Director Reaches Crescendo;" and "Residents Pour In to Discuss Water Rates."

Best Single Issue - March 4, 2018
Best Business, Economic or Labor Reportinng - work done of the $500 million investment by JSW into the former Mingo Junction steel plant.
Best Advertising Special Section - Lawn and Garden publication
