WHEELING — Two people are dead following a head-on collision on W.Va. 2 near the Ohio County/Brooke County line about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard.
Howard said the accident occurred in the area of where the Alliance Coal tipple is situated along W.Va. 2. The fatalities involved the drivers of both vehicles; there were no passengers in either vehicle.
"The vehicle's driver was possibly having a medical issue, was traveling northbound, hit the guardrail and went into the southbound lanes and hit a vehicle head-on," Howard said.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
"It's an unfortunate incident that happened," he added. "Deputies are on scene reconstructing the accident."
Howard did not have the victims' names available as the deputies were still working the scene. The families had been notified of their deaths. The southbound lanes were closed during the reconstruction Tuesday evening.
