Get to Bottom Of Wiretap Allegations

Midway through his presidency, Barack Obama became so frustrated with news leaks in the White House that he authorized the Justice Department to harass — and that is the appropriate word — scores of Associated Press reporters. Government operatives secretly seized records from their home, cell and office phones.

With that in mind, is it so difficult to imagine that Obama authorized tapping telephones used by then-candidate Donald Trump and some in his campaign prior to the Nov. 8 election?

During the weekend, Trump used his favored communications tool, Twitter, to claim that Obama authorized the pre-election phone taps. FBI Director James Comey denied it. So did former National Security Adviser James Clapper. And so did a spokesman for Obama.

Members of Congress with authority to investigate such matters have vowed to look into Trump’s allegation, as they should.

In fact, no stone should be left unturned to get to the bottom of the president’s contention.

If true, it would be an outrageous perversion of the political process.

If false, Trump’s allegation — which he stuck by earlier this week — would reflect badly on the commander-in-chief.

Either way, the public deserves the truth.
