Many West Virginians have survived drug addiction physically, only to learn their financial futures are uncertain, at best. That drives some back to substance abuse.
Victims of the drug crisis sweeping our state include men, women and even juveniles of all walks of life. Many former addicts have much to offer -- if they are given second chances.
A panel discussion, "Just Work," on the subject is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today in the Center for Educational Technologies recital hall at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Four women with expertise in various aspects of the problem will talk about both the opportunities and challenges facing people who have been incarcerated for drug offenses, or have gone through rehabilitation programs.
The challenges are many. The opportunities ought to be greater. Second chances should be more plentiful. Telling former addicts, "One strike, you're out," just doesn't make sense.
