Pick Interim School Leader Cautiously

Less than a week after Brooke County Board of Education members select an interim superintendent for the school district, early voting on a critical tax levy to support schools will begin. What board members do will have an effect, perhaps decisively, on how voters react.

Board members have someone in mind to replace former Superintendent Toni Shute, who resigned last month as it was announced state officials are investigating her actions. A meeting to discuss and perhaps vote on an interim superintendent had been set for Friday, but was called off due to inclement weather.

Now, the meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday in the board offices in Wellsburg.

No doubt some people are aware of the name or names being considered, but the general public is not.

Given the environment of widespread mistrust in management of the school system, one suggestion made after Shute’s resignation makes sense. It is that board members consider someone from outside the Brooke County school system as the interim leader.

Whether they do that or not, a key consideration must be finding someone not tainted at all by mistakes and outright misbehavior under Shute’s administration. Proceeding with the same old, same old would be a mistake that could kill the levy.

Early voting on it begins Feb. 8, with the election itself set for Feb. 23. Time to regain trust is running out.
