Helping Students Earn Their Degrees

Education is the key to a secure, successful career, but too many West Virginians cannot afford to earn post-high school degrees and certificates. Kudos to officials at West Liberty University and West Virginia Northern Community College for thinking outside the box to make that easier.

On Tuesday, WVNCC Interim President Michael Koon and WLU President Stephen Greiner signed a “reverse transfer agreement.” It affects students who attend WVNCC but transfer to WLU before earning associate degrees. The new pact means such students can apply credits earned at the university toward earning associate degrees from the community college.

What a great idea. It is likely the reverse transfers will help a substantial number of students who, under the rigid rules that for many years governed much of higher education, would have been out of luck.

West Virginia needs all the two-year and four-year college graduates we can get. Here’s hoping other institutions use the WLU-WVNCC plan as a model.
