Regulating the Rides

1 min read

Two years ago, an amusement ride at the Ohio State Fair broke apart in operation, killing one man and injuring seven other people. The tragedy made clear the need for better regulation of such rides.

Last week, state regulators refused to allow one ride to operate at the fair. "Visible corrosion" on metal parts was cited. Operators of four other rides were told to make minor repairs.

Good. Agencies in both Ohio and West Virginia that regulate amusement rides should take a zero-tolerance attitude toward safety concerns. No ride at any event, large or small, should be permitted to operate if inspectors find cause for concern.

Starting at /week.
