Increase Pay For Teachers, Troopers
West Virginia House of Delegates members have approved a bill that would increase pay by about 5 percent for public school employees and State Police troopers.
State senators should approve the raise, too.
With lawmakers in the final week of their regular session, there is some concern about whether a majority of senators will go along with the raise for teachers and school service personnel. Some blame that on controversy, along with a two-day strike by unionized school employees, over the omnibus education bill.
Denying school employees the raise would accomplish nothing toward school reform, however.
Last fall, after Gov. Jim Justice proposed the pay hikes, Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, said he could “guarantee that this will occur in the next legislative session.” Carmichael should lead the push for senators to approve the raise and put money for it in the state budget.
