CAMERON -- The Cameron softball team will be forfeiting the rest of its 2019 season due to a lack of players.
The Dragons entered the season with 11 on the roster and following several injuries, the team decided it was best to discontinue the campaign and try again next year.
Cameron has been playing its home games at the 12th Street fields in Moundsville due to the mining work done at its home field, which makes traveling for practice and games difficult, another reason for the decrease in numbers.
"Last year we had 15 or 16 girls and we started this year with 11," Cameron athletics director Roger Simmons said. "Some of the kids can't travel everyday to practice or for games and we have had some injuries, too.
"It got to the point where everyday was a gametime decision whether we were going to play or not. It wasn't fair to other teams. Now, teams can try to find other opponents and reschedule some games."
Three seniors will see their high school softball careers cut short for Cameron, which made the decision even more difficult.
"It was a tough call but it was a team decision," Simmons said. "I feel bad for the girls and the seniors but we will try again next year."
Simmons is hopeful the team will get its field back next year and the numbers will once again be on the rise.
"It's just for this season. Nothing is permanent," Simmons said. "We have girls who like to play but traveling 40 minutes on a bus for games and practice isn't much fun for the girls.
"We should have our field back next year, which is right across the road and there may be more girls who will want to play, then."
