Wheeling’s C3 Church Gears Up for Annual Summer Camp

C3 Church is gearing up for its annual youth soccer camp, which combines athletic instruction and vacation bible school.

The camp, in its 12th year, will run Sunday through Wednesday at The Linsly School, according to co-director Chad Adams.

“Over the last few years, the camp has really grown to the point where we’ve been receiving 450 kids, ages 4-10,” he said. “And they’re all from the local area. One thing that separates our camp is the dedication of our volunteers. We have over 200 volunteers to help.”

Many of those volunteers will come from the church itself, according to the Rev. Adam Mick, pastor at C3 Church.

Volunteers will be divided into 10 teams, including coaches, which will include both high school and college players, coaches from the area, and others who will help out with traffic control, parking, greeting and registration.

“For the first hour the kids are split into age groups,” Adams said. “There is an hour of soccer training. It’s light. Fun. Gets them moving and sweating a bit. At the same time teaching them some fundamentals of the game. We want them to leave camp having learned a few things.”

The last 45 minutes they come back in and get into a large group to sing songs and perform a skit. Then, they break back into age groups, share a story from the Bible, enjoy some juice and cookies and head home.

The origin of the soccer camp stemmed from C3 wanting to put a new twist on the concept of vacation bible school in order to make it more fun and engaging.

“We had a lot of people in the congregation who were heavily involved in soccer,” Adams said. “We thought if we could combine a soccer camp with vacation bible school and make it a fun event that it might work. And the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

He emphasized the importance of it being free to the public, and said he and the church feel it’s more of a genuine contribution to the community that way.

“It’s great to see all the people from our community and from our church come together over the course of four days,” Mick added. “It’s impactful and encouraging to see the community come out like that. And that’s probably the coolest thing for me to be able to witness.”

It’s not too late for area kids to sign up. Call the church at 304-905-900 by Friday, or just show up early on the first day of camp and register on-site.

The camp runs from 6-7:45 p.m. each day.
