Wheeling Police Doubt Man Pulled From Creek Had Been Reported Missing

While the identity of the man recovered from Little Wheeling Creek on Wednesday night is still unknown, a few details about him were released by police Thursday.

City Public Information Officer Philip Stahl described the man as white and near middle age. Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger added that neither Wheeling nor Belmont County had missing persons cases that fit his description, and that it was unlikely that the man had been dead for very long before he was found.

“We are looking throughout the region to see if there are any missing persons. The city of Wheeling doesn’t have any that fit, and I don’t believe Belmont County has any either,” Schwertfeger said. “Age is too complicated to guess how old (he was), but middle aged is fair. … I don’t think he had been there that long.”

Police say the body was discovered around 5 p.m. by people walking across Shilling Bridge over the creek in Elm Grove. The body will be taken to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for identification but had not been transported there by Thursday.
