Zonta, Worldwide Women’s Empowerment Group, Plans Open House for Tonight in Wheeling

A worldwide group focusing on the empowerment of women holds its first event in Wheeling tonight.

Zonta International is inviting interested women to an open house happening from 4-6 p.m. today at the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, 2603 Eoff St., Wheeling. Wine, soft drinks, food and information will be on tap.

“We believe there is a real need for a club like ours in the Wheeling area,” said Eileen Borchardt, a lieutenant governor for Zonta International. “We will offer an open house, and discuss our focus on helping women to advance their status.”

Locally, Zonta wants to partner with the soup kitchen to start a “Cargo of Caring” project, she said. This will involve gathering a collection of winter items to distribute to women and their families when cold weather comes.

“This will be our first project in Wheeling, but we need to attract like-minded women and professionals to our cause,” Borchardt said. “Having spoken with (Soup Kitchen Executive Director Becky Shilling-Rodocker), we believe there are like-minded women in Wheeling who will want to join us.”

The club is seeking professional women associated with “decision-making positions,” likely working in business or as a teacher, she said. Retired professionals also are welcome.

Those attending the open house will be invited to join the regional Zonta club based in Marietta. If more than 15 people in the Wheeling area express interest, a local chapter may be formed, according to Borchardt.

She said Zonta boasts more than 29,000 members worldwide with clubs located in 63 countries. The group looks to empower women and prevent violence — whether it be domestic or of any other nature, she said.

Zonta also has several programs involving the prevention of child marriage for children under age 18, Borchardt explained.

It is a problem not just in other countries but in America, as well, she said. Zonta has formed the USA Caucus to lobby state-by-state for the elimination of early child marriage opportunities.

While Zonta seeks to tackle worldwide issues, it also seeks to promote and serve the needs in specific communities.

Those wanting more information about Zonta should contact Borchardt at 419-239-3530.

Starting at $2.99/week.
