Wednesday morning marked the end to more than two months of life on the run for Reba, the runaway dog whose rescue efforts sparked a community effort.

Reba was caught early Wednesday in a Bethlehem backyard, where Laura Seidler had befriended the skittish dog by leaving plates of food out.

When Reba was seen feeding in the morning, Seidler closed the gate of her 6-foot fence, penning Reba in and allowing her to be leashed and kenneled.

Reba was subsequently taken to New Horizon Animal Hospital, where Chris Shriver said Reba had “a few bumps” but was otherwise in good shape. Reba had been on the run since Nov. 14 from her Carmel Road home.

“She’s eating, they did some blood work on her, everything looks okay so far,” Shriver said. “She’s got a few bumps on her, and she’s totally exhausted, but they’re going to monitor her.”

Reba and her brother Rufus will be taken into the care of The Road Home Animal Project, Shriver said. Their owner, she added, has been consulted and will not foot the bills for her care, which are being taken up by TRHAP.

“We’re picking up the bills, he’s going to give them to Road Home, we’re going to contact the rescue where he got them from, and I think he’s going to give us (Rufus) too,” Shriver said. “We’re going to work with that rescue to see if we can take those dogs on, since we’re taking on the bills and everything.”

Shriver, president of TRHAP, thanked the community for their tireless work in the time leading up to Reba’s return home.

“We want to thank everybody — the whole community, the people who’ve posted, who were monitoring the traps, who let us use their yards,” Shriver said. “Even though she wasn’t caught in a trap, we couldn’t have done it without them. … Everybody’s eyes letting us know where she was, that was the key.”
