Enter the ‘Dungeon of Horrors’ — If You Dare

MOUNDSVILLE — The Dungeon of Horrors, a haunted house at the former West Virginia Penitentiary, is now operating on weekends through Halloween.
Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased online at https://wvpentours.com/halloween/dungeon/. The haunted house is for those 13 years old and older. Groups are taken into the pen with the tour lasting about 45 minutes. The haunted house is not wheelchair accessible.
While the penitentiary serves as a haunted house each Halloween, it is also the site of year-round tours and paranormal investigations. Many paranormal investigators believe that the spirits of past inmates haunt the facility.
The penitentiary, located at 18 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, operated from 1876 to 1995. While it was open, it saw prison riots and nearly 100 inmates were put to death via hangings and the electric chair, dubbed “Old Sparky.”
“Experience the fright of being locked in a cell, the fear of being lost in a maze, and the terror of a nightmarish walk through our Dungeon of Horrors,” according to the penitentiary’s web site.
“Will you manage to keep up with your group and not get separated? Do you have what it takes to make it through? Don’t worry, our actors will be there to help you along.”
Closed-toed shoes are recommended for the event. The Dungeon of Horrors is a no-touch haunt, according to its website.
“Don’t touch us and we won’t touch you,” it stated.
No pushing or shoving is allowed nor is touching the sets or props. The penitentiary is a historical landmark, and is known to encounter visits from live bats, mice, rats and raccoons.
For those wanting a less intense experience, the penitentiary is also hosting a North Walk tour, a prop- and actor-free event taking place at the same time as the Dungeon of Horrors. It is a 45-minute lights-out flashlight tour through the oldest section of the penitentiary led by a seasonal guide. Participants will walk through the North Hall cellblock, the boiler room, psych ward and infirmary.
