Patriots & Heroes Weekend Is Saturday, Sunday in Glen Dale

GLEN DALE — People will have a chance to step back in time and see what life was like during World War II and other wars during the Marshall County Historical Society’s Patriots & Heroes Weekend, slated 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Jude Park in Glen Dale.

Formerly known as the World War II Weekend, the event features re-enactors portraying different eras of war including the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and WWII. There will also be a variety of speakers, a children’s Bootcamp Obstacle Course, vintage and antique military vehicles and uniforms and other items, and the chance to purchase military surplus at the Quartermaster Store.

People can visit the Veterans Tent to hear local veterans’ stories and thank them for their service.

The opening ceremony at the St. Jude Park, located at 710 Jefferson Ave., Glen Dale, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with music and recognition of veterans.

Battle re-enactments are slated at 4 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, led by the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

On Saturday evening, a 1940s Swing Dance is scheduled from 7-10 p.m. at St. Jude Hall, Glen Dale, featuring music by Matt Hill and Friends. People can dance or just enjoy the music.

There will also be a concession stand selling snacks, ice cream, beer and wine; proceeds benefit the historic Cockayne Farmstead preservation project. Tickets are $10 at the door; veterans enter free.

Saturday:

10 a.m. — Flag Raising and Opening Ceremony;

11 a.m. — Jim Belcher, Jr., USS Indianapolis (Speaker Tent 1) and Joe Roxby, Second Siege of Fort Henry (Speaker Tent 2);

Noon — Jeff Rutherford, Hitler, the United States and the Expansion into Total War (Tent 1) and the Women in Service Veterans Panel (Tent 2);

1 p.m. — Hal Gorby, West Virginians in the Vietnam War (Tent 1) and Joe Geiger, Meetings and Militia: A Look into the Civil War Years in Marshall County (Tent 2);

2 p.m. — Kasey Connor, None Shall Walk Alone: The Story of Holocaust Upstander Janusz Korczak (Tent 1) and Cynthia Sandor, Through Innocent Eyes: The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth (Tent 2);

3 p.m. — Rebecca Park as Colonel Ruby Bradley (Tent 1) and the Vietnam Veterans Panel (Tent 2);

4 p.m. — Battle Re-enactment near Speaker Tent 2;

7-10 p.m. — 1940s Swing Dance at St. Jude Hall;

Sunday:

10 a.m. — Military Chaplain Style Service, with Rev. Spencer Curry (Tent 1);

11 a.m. — Gary Rider, Marshall County Medal Recipients (Tent 1) and Jim Brockman, American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor Museum (Tent 2);

Noon — Richard Wolfe, West Virginia Soldiers at War (Tent 1) and Cynthia Sandor, Through Innocent Eyes: The Chosen Girls of the Hitler Youth (Tent 2);

1 p.m. — Rebecca Park, Heroes of the Philippines in World War II (Tent 1) and Kasey Connor, None Shall Walk Alone: The Story of Holocaust Upstander Janusz Korczak (Tent 2);

2 p.m. — Battle Demonstration at the Cockayne Farmstead;

2:15 p.m. — Joe Geiger, Meetings and Militia: A Look into the Civil War Years in Marshall County (Tent 1) and Jim Belcher, Jr., USS Indianapolis (Tent 2);

3 p.m. — Opus Music Club (Tent 2); and

4 p.m. — Flag Lowering Ceremony.
