More Human Remains Found At South Wheeling Site
WHEELING – More human bones have been found at a South Wheeling location where a skull and other remains were found last week.
Wheeling Police officers went back to the site near 42nd and Wood streets Sunday morning and found additional human bones, reported Philip Stahl, public information officer for the city of Wheeling. He added they had periodically been returning there since the initial discovery on Wednesday.
“They did find some more bones at the same location,” Stahl said. “But there is no public safety threat.
All of the remains recovered will be sent to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.
“But it is going to take time,” Stahl continued.
Wheeling Police Maj. Josh Sanders, commander of the department’s investigations bureau, said that 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, police were called to the corner of 42nd and Wood streets.
Someone who was walking in the area had called Wheeling Police to say they had found a skull. The officers who responded determined it was a human skill and began investigating the rest of the area.
Sanders said then more bones were found that police believe are connected to the skull, but that the department did not want to comment further on that discovery.
The investigations bureau was on the scene Wednesday afternoon, as was the medical examiner. Sanders said the WPD also called in the local coroner as well as cadaver dogs to assist in the search.
Officers also flew a drone over the area to gain a different perspective of the scene and help with crime scene documentation.
