The Older People With Active Lifestyles group is heading out of town for another day trip with a Stepping Stones of Victorian Grandeur Tea Tour at the Salem (Ohio) Historical Society on Aug. 18.

The OPALs members will step back in time to the 1800s in Victorian style with their first stop and morning tea with “the presidents’ wives” in period dress. The portrayers will share humorous stories of the first ladies’ daily lives in the White House. Pastries, breads and tea will be offered during the presentation.

Other stops will include the Salem Historical Society and Freedom Hall, the Barnyard Boutique at the Stone Trough and the White House Farm Market, which is known for its fudge and homemade doughnuts.

The final stop will be for high tea at Piccadilly Parlour Victorian Tean Room. Each visitor will be treated to a cup of soup, assorted tea sandwiches, quiche, sweets including a famous orange tea bread and flavored tea.

Mary Velez, OPALs director, said, “I am really looking forward to this trip with our wonderful OPALs members. I have been doing this for over 20 years now and every OPALs trip and event is like having a big family reunion. Of course, there is always great food, wonderful fellowship and loads of fun. Our OPALs advisory board does a great job of planning these events.”

Earlier  this summer, the OPALs group traveled to Columbus this summer to see the Lennon Sisters perform. The excursion included a dinner and a chance to go back in time to great memories of the Lawrence Welk show and simpler times.

The show included nostalgic videoclips of the young Lennon Sisters singing with great stars such as Andy Williams, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. They have been performing together for nearly 50 years.

OPALs is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year. Anyone, age 55 or older, is eligible to join. Membership is free and includes a quarterly newsletter, free exercise classes at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, luncheons, educational events and day and multi-day trips.
