Droning On About Total Nonsense

Editor, News-Register: Ohio County Schools has a new toy. He’s called “Jerome the Drone.” Jerome is flying all around the county filming beautiful welcome-back-to-school videos, which make for marvelous social media content. Jerome is new and shiny. He’s part of the in-crowd and hangs with the cool kids. Jerome has an old friend who is not as popular with the educrats and only makes an appearance once a year. The administration would prefer not to talk about her. She is not as attractive as Jerome despite her once-a-year makeover. Frankly, no amount of lipstick can help the ...

Saving Our Schools and Nation

Editor, News-Register: National Public Radio (NPR) broadcast a story recently about a national teaching shortage in America’s public schools. NPR cited Covid-19 as the primary reason for this shortage, but as a substitute teacher in several districts over the past 10 years, I know the real reason first hand; a total loss of control in our classrooms. NPR will not broach this issue, for the same reason John Kennedy hesitated to introduce educational legislation in 1962, because policymakers and politicians warned President Kennedy that public education was a political snake ...

Energy Diversification Necessary

Editor, News-Register: West Virginia needs to attract the kinds of highly skilled jobs and industries that will create a truly sustainable, 21st century economy. That’s why we must continue to invest in all forms of energy including fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables. In addition, we need to develop sophisticated energy technologies such as energy storage. Investing in renewable energy and new, clean energy technologies like energy storage will help create the kinds of jobs that West Virginia communities need right now while also supporting local businesses up and down the ...

Nation on Right Path with Biden

“Give’m Hell” was usually a moniker reserved for Harry Truman. Now though, President Joe Biden has earned that sobriquet even more than Harry. Joe has the Republicans sputtering, gasping and spitting due to Joe’s achievements in less than two years in office and with only 50 votes in the 100-seat Senate and a margin of only four in the House. Starting with foreign policy, Joe has taken out the master planner of the 9/11 attack (Ayman Al- Jawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s second in comand), provided the arms and European support to help Ukraine fight Russia to a standstill ...

Ohio Valley Heart Walk Is Set

Editor, News-Register: Over the past year, the Ohio Valley has prioritized health more than ever. Our community has rallied around healthy habits by prioritizing mental and physical health. Now is the time to renew that commitment to health. Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, remains the No. 1 killer of Americans. We need to meet that challenge with the same vigor to better prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease and stroke so that fewer people suffer and die. Improving health is a long-term plan and what we do as a community today builds a future and a legacy for the ...

Working For Their Constituents

Editor, News-Register: I was wondering how many people benefited from the American Rescue Act which was signed into law on March 11, 2021. This package included the Child Tax Credit, emergency SNAP benefits, rental assistance and paycheck protection. The sad thing is that all three of the representatives from West Virginia voted against it. It is also interesting to note that they did not vote to protect our elections and our right to vote. When I vote for someone to represent me, I want them to think about issues that affect me, my family and my neighbors. I do not need ...
