Editor, News-Register: As the community prepares to vote in the West Virginia Primary Election (on May 10), there are critical questions regarding Ohio County Public Library funding that should be posed to candidates seeking election/reelection to Board of Education open seats. Past actions of the Ohio County Board of Education (OCBE) resulted in a reduction in the Library’s current year operating allocation from $884,547 to $589,698 ($294,849 less). Funding Cut Did Hurt Library

Editor, News-Register: To be clear, the loss of $300,000 for the Ohio County Public Library cut by the Ohio County Board of Education did have an impact on many levels of library activities, although all may not be noted by the public. For the first time in many years, the employees did not receive a cost of living raise. Being opened on Sunday was eliminated and Saturday hours as well as evening hours were cut back. Editor, News-Register: In the Sunday News-Register dated April 24th, in the “Pats on the Back” section, the Marshall County School Board members are granted a “Pat on the Back” regarding the county’s Levy Rate. The members voted to keep the rate at 86% even though the school system is facing a shortfall of $880,000. The article reads that the board members put taxpayers first and noted that they could make their budget work without raising taxes. Editor, News-Register: Parents, please be aware! Wheeling City Council had the first reading of a city ordinance to restrict parent’s right to direct their own child’s counseling for gender identity! I attended the Tuesday (April 19) meeting where four people, including me, spoke on an Amendment to City Ordinance 169 that gives the Human Rights Commission more authority in our city.
