Editor, News-Register: The United Mine Workers of America recently held a memorial service at the Willow Grove Mine site in Neffs, Ohio, to honor 72 miners who lost their lives in an explosion on March 16, 1940. On behalf of the UMWA I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to all who supported us in making the event possible. We also want to thank Ed DiOrio of WTOV-TV news and Ashley Kaiser of WTRF-TV news for covering the service and giving those who were unable to attend a way to remember what happened that tragic day. Editor, News-Register: This has bothered me for some time now and I can’t be silent any longer. As I read the weekend newspaper, I no longer see “The Right” and “The Left” opinion sections. I realize we are a red state, but I have been seeing, overwhelmingly, a host of Republican, anti-Biden, pro-Trump articles. Editor, News-Register: When I reflect on Russia’s slaughter in the Ukraine, I ask myself why is Russia doing this? And why is the so-called West sanctimonious about this latest war? The Russian’s can certainly make a case for their homeland defense. Editor, News-Register: I’m writing this letter because I want bring attention to what the Hope Scholarship means to my family and many families like mine. My family struggled our way through the traditional schooling methods that work well for some. My husband and I cringed as our children questioned their capability and compared themselves to their classmates. Our evenings were spent trying to go over the lesson so that they could complete their homework. Their school day was now extended and their time for play was cut short.
