Editor, News-Register: I worked my entire career for a German company, and I remember the day that my German boss said, “Do you realize that the United States is one of the youngest countries in the world with one of the oldest governments? Editor, News-Register: As the coronavirus rages on across the state, it has caused yet another crisis — child hunger. Thousands of families with kids right here in West Virginia are now dealing with unemployment, rising food prices, eviction and hunger. And yet Congress continues to fail these children by leaving nutrition assistance out of the coronavirus relief package. Hunger is a problem we can actually fix. Increasing SNAP benefits by 15% would mean an additional $25 per month per person. Just $25 per month for a child would allow families to buy the nutritional foods they ...

Helping Others

The pandemic has brought a lot of suffering and also a lot of confusion — the task of trying to differentiate fact from “almost fact” is seemingly insurmountable. While dealing with this cloud of anxiety and physical distancing let’s try to remember to have compassion for others, not just now but especially when this nightmare is ending. Suppressing Voter

Editor, News-Register: As President Trump has made an entirely baseless claim, which unfortunately has been his forte, that widespread mail-in voting (as a result of COVID-19 concerns) would result in “the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history,” he has, among other recommendations, proposed to somehow delay the upcoming election. He, as president, has no authority to personally implement that idea, as every presidential election is statutorially established by Congress, which has been the case since 1845, and only Congress, if it so chooses, can change it. Get Kids Back to School

Editor, News-Register: Jenny Craig is the president of the Ohio County Education Association, the larger of the two local teacher unions. Recently she has been advocating on every local media outlet, be it print, radio, or television, that our kids should not be in school for at least the first nine weeks, and all education should be entirely on-line.
