Help Minority Businesses

Editor, News-Register: Sometime in the early 1970s, an employee of Centre Foundry and Machine died unexpectedly. My memory isn’t so good if it was work related or not, but the employees thought taking a day off in memory of the deceased man would be a nice gesture. My father, who was in upper management at the still-functioning mill, thought of a better idea: work the next day and donate the one-day pay to the man’s family. Unfortunately, those employees didn’t agree with my late father’s idea, thus ending a happy ending to the story and positive memory for the man’s ...

Protect Postal Service

Editor, News-Register: I am writing concerning the crisis in the Postal Service. This vital entity is under attack by the president and his fellow Republicans. President Trump has pledged to “starve the Postal Service” of much- need funding while handing out relief money with ease to other businesses that are effected by the current pandemic. He has even gone so far as to call it “a joke.” Our local congressman, Bill Johnson, seems to think that the latest controversy was drummed up by Speaker Pelosi and her liberal left allies. He claims that Democrats conjured up yet ...

Stand Up and Fight

Editor, News-Register: I am flabbergasted that I haven’t heard the screams, “Oh No!” Where is the outrage? What in the hell is the matter with you? What am I talking about? Donald Trump and his no-nothings have set in motion the death of Social Security, Medicare, disability insurance, Medicaid, pre-existing insurance coverage and the Affordable Care Act. If this OK with you, then you are following the lemmings off the cliff into the abyss. You are probably saying, “Trump can’t, or wouldn’t, do that.” Then you have been asleep at the switch. Trump ...

You Can’t Fix Stupid

Editor, News-Register: After watching the next day’s news coverage of the last day of the RNC convention, two lines came immediately to mind, one from Forrest Gump ,who stated, “Stupid is as stupid does” and comic Ron White’s human perception, “You can’t fix stupid.” Due to the complacency of the president, totally ignoring the dire consequences of not wearing masks and social distancing, reportedly, 2,000 people sat or stood side by side mostly unmasked to hear the president and others’ speeches. Three hundred mostly unmasked people were involved in states’ ...

Vote as Christians

Editor, News-Register: As the election approaches, it is not erroneous for Christians to vote as Christ taught. It is our obligation to love our neighbor. That means being pro-birth for God’s creation of developing human life in the womb, and continued pro-life for them after birth, until natural death. The “Affordable Care Act’s” high premiums have been less affordable to many people who want to have children. Rich or poor, all lives matter to our Creator. Bill Glaser Wheeling

We’re Too Polarized

Editor, News-Register: I worked my entire career for a German company, and I remember the day that my German boss said, “Do you realize that the United States is one of the youngest countries in the world with one of the oldest governments? Your Constitution is something you should be profoundly proud of.” I never thought of it in those terms up to that point, but I do now. In other words, we have something very special. Something that must be the envy of many. And I am not talking about our Second Amendment right, or the “Right to wear a mask or not”!! Stop and remember ...
