As Wheeling celebrates the 100th anniversary of Earl W. Oglebay's gift, there is one principle that deserves as much attention as the park's history: public assets should have public involvement. Everything written about Col. Oglebay's legacy emphasizes that he donated Waddington Farm to "the people of Wheeling and the vicinity" for public recreation. Those words matter. Ohio Valley Trail Partners is an all-volunteer organization. We would like to thank the sponsors of the 19th Annual Wheeling Heritage Trail Tour. OVTP coordinates the annual Wheeling Heritage Trail Bicycle tour, which is our primary fundraiser. The money raised is used to help improve the Wheeling Heritage Trail, support neighboring trails and groups, and encourage positive usage of our trails. Every few years an issue arises within Ohio County Schools that demands a full explanation from school administrators. Several years ago it was a kindergarten student that walked out the front door of the Warwood School and headed for home in the middle of the day. The West Virginia Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Program has provided grant funding for some important efforts in the state. More than $700,000 will be distributed to programs ranging from the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence Inc., which serves rural communities across the state, to more focused efforts such as the Branches domestic violence shelter in Huntington.
