Editor, News-Register: Johnny Haught’s recent column declaring that “independent” is no longer a bad word skips an uncomfortable possibility: sometimes the party didn’t fail the candidate. Sometimes, voters simply rejected the candidate. That possibility seems strangely absent from the post-election analysis of Haught and Dave Cantrell. Both suffered overwhelming defeats in 2024. After Samaritan’s Purse arrived in Ohio County last year to help those affected by the devastating and fatal flooding in the area, the organization knew it wanted to come back. The last thing Ohio County needs is another empty, unused building, especially one that was built in the last few years. That’s why it was good to see that the former Guntry site at The Highlands likely will soon have a new occupant. Consider Adopting Pets

A full house at the Ohio County Animal Shelter means an less expensive road toward finding a new pet for the household. There currently are 22 dogs and 25 cats at the shelter, and in an effort to find those animals new families, the shelter is offering a 50% discount on adoption fees through the end of August. The normal $160 fee to adopt a dog is currently $80. The normal $60 fee to adopt a cat is currently $30. Those fees also include having the animal spayed or neutered.
