Wheeling Attorney, Fitzsimmons, No Longer Representing Huggins In WVU Matters
A Wheeling attorney who has been one of several representing former West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has told WVU he no longer represents Huggins in university matters.
In a letter obtained by several media outlets, attorney Bob Fitzsimmons informed WVU’s General Counsel Stephanie Taylor that he won’t represent Huggins on WVU-related matters moving forward.
“Please be advised that myself and my law firm no longer represent Bob Huggins in connection with any matter related to West Virginia University,” Fitzsimmons wrote. “Therefore, it is no longer necessary for you to provide me the documents/information I requested in my July 7, 2023 email. “If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.”
WVU has said Fitzsimmons had requested information about Huggins’ compensation and benefits after his resignation and retirement. That resignation and retirement came after Huggins was arrested on DUI charges in Pittsburgh after allegedly recording a blood alcohol content of 0.21.
Fitzsimmons and attorney Bill Wilmoth were with Huggins last week in a Pittsburgh courtroom for an appearance. Huggins has been working with multiple attorneys since his resignation was announced – and he subsequently claimed that he did not resign and the statement released wasn’t written by him.
Those claims have come through attorney David Campbell of the Cleveland office of Lewis Brisbois. WVU strongly pushed back on those claims in a response letter, saying among other things that another attorney working with Huggins, James “Rocky” Gianola, represented the coach in multiple discussions across June 16-17 and told the university that Huggins had decided to resign and retire.
WVU assistant Josh Eilert has been named interim head coach in the meantime.
