High School Roundup: Wheeling Park Wins W.Va. Girls Golf Team Tournament

WELLSBURG — In their second year as a program, the Wheeling Park Patriots girls golf team moved up from the novice to the Championship division and won the West Virginia Girls Golf Team Tournament held at Highland Springs Golf Course.

Wheeling Park shot a 296 between their trio of Abby Thomas (93), Katelyn Maloney (104) and Carter Kidd (106).

Fairmont Senior came in second, and Brooke came in third with a 340. Their top performer was Ellie McDonald, who shot a 109.

Wheeling Central finished fourth, led by Olivia Blatt’s 109.

University, Tyler and John Marshall did not field a complete team, but the Monarchs’ Kianna Garrison was the medalist of the day, shooting an 88 on the course.

The medalist competition between Garrison and Abby Kingora of University came down to a head-to-head playoff where Garrison took a one-stroke lead on the first hole, and the two then matched scores for 15 holes. Kingora birdied the 17th hole to throw the match into a tie. Garrison then edged out Kingora on the 18th hole to earn medalist honors.

Weir Ends Regular Season On A High Note

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Weir Red Riders capped off their regular season on Thursday, winning a three-team outing with Oak Glen and Madonna during the inaugural “Hancock County Cup” at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course.

Weir shot a 148 as a team, followed by Oak Glen at 183 and Madonna at 235.

Red Rider Guy Meneely was medalist of the evening, shooting one-under Par at a 35. Aiden Ferguson carded a 37, and Isaiah Smith and Evan Kaczmarek each shot a 38.

Oak Glen was led by Gannon Cline, who carded a 42. Madonna ‘s Xavier Taylor shot a 47 to lead the Blue Dons.

Weir is 29-9 at the end of their regular season.

Weir and Oak Glen will travel to Moundsville Country Club on Monday to participate in the WVSSAC 2A Regional Golf Tournament while Madonna will travel to Mingo Bottom for the 1A Regional Tournament.

Purple Riders Bounce Back With Sweep Of Huskies

MARTINS FERRY — Martins Ferry swept Harrison Central on Thursday, 25-7, 25-8, 25-13.

Giana Chirpas finished tops in kills for the Riders with 10. She also served up four aces. Nicole Hammerquist finished with eight kills. Maddie Lucas had seven kills and three aces.

Olivia Harkness finished her day’s work with an impressive 10 service aces for Ferry. SJ Koller led the team with 18 digs.

River Falls To Knights

KIDWELL — Homestanding Tyler prevailed over the Pilots on Thursday in a five-set match, 17-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-21, 15-7.

For River, Mallarie Maddy racked up 23 kills, one more than Hallie Hammel. Zoey Fox had 13.

Maci Isaly piled up 57 assists as River’s setter, and Aubrey Fetty led the Pilots with three service aces. Isaly and Hammel each had two.
