Rick Trickett brings more offensive linemen to WVU football
MORGANTOWN — Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia are making it a priority to improve the offensive line through the transfer portal.
Jacksonville State offensive lineman Amare’ “Bubba” Grayson announced his commitment on social media that he’s transferring to the Mountaineers. He’s the second Gamecock lineman to join WVU this cycle, joining Cameron Griffin.
Grayson is a year younger than Griffin, but he’s on track to be just as good. In his first season. Grayson played in 14 games under Rich Rodriguez in 2024. He had eight starts at right guard and was named to the Conference USA’s All-Freshman team. Grayson was rated the third-best pass blocker with 97.8% effectiveness and didn’t allow a sack in 224 passing plays. In 2025, Grayson started in all 14 games and was named to Conference USA’s first team. He was coached by new WVU offensive line coach Rick Trickett in 2025.
Grayson is another big lineman. He’s 6-foot-3, 310 pounds as a sophomore, so he should put on more weight when he gets to Morgantown. Rodriguez added a bunch of big linemen in the portal. He went on a rant after losing to Arizona State that the difference was they couldn’t get a yard, so Rodriguez made sure that wouldn’t happen again.
Grayson could be a starter, but he could be an impact player in the coming years with two years of eligibility. WVU’s picked up a lot of linemen in the portal, and center Landen Livingston and tackle Nick Krahe are both returning, so it’ll be interesting to see who Trickett and Rodriguez go with. 4-star offensive tackle Kevin Brown is also joining the team through the 2026 recruiting class, too.
Grayson becomes the fifth lineman to transfer to the Mountaineers, and they now have 23 transfers total.
