Jebbia Captures Win No. 300
WELLSBURG — Wheeling Park head boys basketball coach Michael Jebbia notched win No. 300 this weekend, taking down the Brooke Bruins on the road Saturday. The Patriots scored seconds into the contest while the Bruins were held scoreless in the first quarter. Park recorded the first 12 points of the game en route to a 48-33 victory inside the Brooke Wellness Center.
Wheeling Park led 12-0 at the end of the first, and the visitors led by as many as 13 three times in the second. After being held scoreless in the first, the Bruins finally got on the scoreboard with 7:26 left to play in the first half, and the hosts ended up outscoring the Patriots in the quarter as Wheeling Park took a 25-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Brooke continued to battle back in the third as they closed to within seven points on multiple occasions. The Green-and-Gold had multiple opportunities to get even closer, but they were unable to do so. Ultimately, the Bruins outscored the Patriots, 10-8, in the quarter to pull within 33-24 entering the fourth.
Andrew Murdock recorded a game-high 13 points to lead the way offensively for the Green-and-Gold, while Crosby Morris contributed 12.
J.D. Williams tallied a game-high 16 points to lead the way for the Patriots (5-6), while Josh Huffman finished with 15.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Class 3A Semifinals
No. 3 Monroe Central 47, No. 2 Fort Frye 35
BEVERLY — The Seminoles advanced over the Cadets behind a suffocating defense and balanced scoring.
Six players scored at least five points for Monroe Central, led by Brylee McFrederick’s 10 points. Mayzie Emery and Miley Bommer each scored eight and Jadyn Miller scored seven.
McFrederick had eight rebounds and Miller had seven assists.
The Seminoles led 15-9 after the first quarter and 30-15 at halftime.
No. 1 Shenandoah 54, No. 4 Martins Ferry 44
SARAHSVILLE – The top-seeded Zeps zapped the visiting Purple Riders as Molly VanFleet led three twin-figure scorers with Emma Dailey added 15 and Brenna Leach added 14.
Martins Ferry’s Giana Chirpas led all scorers with 23, but no other player reached double digits.
Class 2A Semifinal
No. 1 Southern Local 68, No. 4 Shadyside 58
SALINEVILLE – The visiting Tigers received 22 points from Kaci Tsoras and 14 from Cam Kolvek but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the undefeated Indians (20-0).
Katie Kellogg poured in 31 points to lead the hosts.
Class 1A Semifinal
No. 2 Cameron 53, No. 3 Heartland Christian 25
CAMERON — The Dragons had no issue with the visiting Lions, advancing over their opponent and moving onto the OVAC Class 1A finals on Saturday.
Cameron had four double-digit scorers on Monday– Kendra Thomas (14), Addison Stern (13), Kenzie Scott (11) and Macey Bertram (10). Thomas nailed four 3-pointers and Scott hit three.
Cameron had a slim 18-16 lead at halftime but ran away in the second half.
Sarah Reynolds led the Lions with 11 points.
Consolation Round
Linsly 64, St. Clairsville 41
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Cadets received 15 points from Alejandra Fernandez and a dozen more from Laura Valderas in their win over the host Red Devils on John Jenkins Court.
St. Clairsville’s Anna Kain led all scorers with 17.
Bellaire 56, Clay-Battelle 39
BELLAIRE – Aubree Hines (25) and Tamya Morgan (18) combined for 43 points in the Big Reds’ victory inside the ‘House of Champions.’
Bellaire is now 11-7.
Barnesville 61, Harrison Central 38
BARNESVILLE – The host Shamrocks’ Aiva Leasure led three players in double figures with 18 points, two more than Lydia Welch as they cruised past the visiting Huskies. Lydia Fuchs added a dozen.
Shyann Nameth and Emily Cope had nine each for Harrison Central.
Wheeling Central 78, Columbiana 52
WHEELING — The Maroon Knights dominated on their home court Monday against the Clippers.
Erin Maxwell and Bella Fitzsimmons each scored 18 points to pace the Maroon. Haley Severns and Seneca Heller joined her teammates in double figures with 12.
River 68, Valley 38
PINE GROVE — The Pilots took off on the road Monday against the Lumberjills, paced by 25 points from Zoey Fox.
Fox scored 16 in the first half, where River led 36-14. Carleigh Trifonoff supported with 19, and Lynn Jones scored 10.
Laken Dawson led Valley with 18 points, making three 3-pointers. Michaela Miller scored 11 as well.
